You put logs in your little crafting window to make wooden planks, then put wooden planks one above the other in your crafting window to make sticks - check out youtube for tons of starter videos to give you some tips! And yeah, night time sucks!

I lost my first cave dwelling after exploring too far and forgetting where the hell I put it, but this time I've built a new house that I'm sure I won't lose.. Hopefully

By the way, you both keep getting lost. you do realise you can press F3 to bring up the debug screen, take a note of your co-ordinates, and find your way back to that point from anywhere... don't you?
